Star Chorus
If you’re in the mood to do
some singing and laughing, step up to the plate and join the
Regional
Star Chorus! We get t ogether every time there is a general membership meeting and
go over our repertoire. This spring we’ll meet
Thursday, April 24 in the afternoon to rehearse for ...drum roll, please...
OUR FIRST PUBLIC PERFORMANCE Thursday night at the Kick Off!
We’ve got a couple more songs
to add to our "repertoire", as we’d like to sing with our Region 26 counterparts
at the joint SET in Richmond, BC Sept. 19-20. I’ve already checked with
their folks and they know what we’re working on as well.
This venture is an honor
system check-off. If your director can find the time to go over these songs
with you, great! If not, get together with other chorus members and learn
them. There’s a learning tools here for One Voice
and Thank You For The Music. The others:
Tuxedo Junction, How We Sang Today, Kokomo, and Fit As A Fiddle should all be
available in the mass sing music and/or your chorus music library (maybe not
Fiddle but be proactive and ‘git ‘er done!).
When you’ve got the songs down,
contact me and I’ll send you your chorus pin (they’re very classy
looking!). An opportunity to sing with your sister Sweet Adelines is a
fantastic experience. Let’s get our numbers over 100... we’ve done it
before!
If you have questions,
please contact me: My email
/ 888-429-4245. See
you soon!

Important New
Passport Information
Is September
19-21 on your calendar?!? That’s the weekend Rumors is coming joining Region
13 and Region 26 for a SET
(Summer Enrichment Time) that won’t soon be forgotten! SET will be
in Richmond, British Columbia this year, which is approximately 2.5 hours
north of Seattle, or 20 minutes south of Vancouver, BC.
We want to
make sure you can get painlessly into and out of Canada, so please review
these regulations:
Flying to Canada
If you will be flying into Canada and then traveling to Richmond,
YOU WILL NEED A
PASSPORT. You can get up-to-date information
here. Be
sure to plan ahead as the whole application process can take four to six weeks.
Driving to Canada
If you will be driving (or boating!) into Canada, A PASSPORT IS NOT YET
NECESSARY as the “passport required” regulation won’t take effect until June 2009 (see
here for details).
However, as of
January 31, 2008, you can no longer “orally declare” your citizenship at the
border. US and Canadian citizens ages 19 and older will need to present a
government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of
citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate (a
complete list of acceptable documents is available
here). Children
ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such
as a birth certificate. Passports and trusted traveler program cards (NEXUS,
SENTRI and FAST) will continue to be accepted as well.
WA
Residents
If you are a Washington resident, a third option is also available with the
new
“enhanced drivers licenses”, which will be good for border crossing
identification by land and sea from Canada and Mexico in lieu of a passport.
To get one of these licenses, applicants will be photographed and interviewed.
They must bring identification and proof of citizenship and residency to the
interview. The specifics are available at the
DOL Website.
After
double-checking the documentation through databases, the WDOL will issue an
enhanced license. Processing might take a week or more. The extra cost of the
new “super” license will be $15 more than the regular renewal cost of $25. Identifi-cation cards will be available for nondrivers. Also, be aware that not
every licensing office offers the enhanced license. You can get a complete
list of participating offices
here.
The bottom line: If you are flying into
Canada, you will need a passport. If you are driving from the US into Canada,
a passport is not required, but you must have your drivers license and
proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. Washington residents also
have the option of getting a new "super license".
We hope this clears up some
confusion. And see you
all at
SET!

Convention News

HEADQUARTERS HOTEL:
It's the place to be!
Are
YOU coming to Spokane for the Regional Convention and Competition in April? If
so, the DoubleTree Hotel is the place to be, not only because it’s
where all the action is, but because we have a contractual obligation to stay
there!
In
the past few years, our numbers have diminished, so the total number of
sleeping rooms (“room block”) contracted five years ago is not the reality of
today.
Question:
What happens if we don't meet the minimum number of
rooms in our room block? Answer: the hotel
charges us for meeting space use--public space we use for rehearsals,
classes, warm-up rooms, etc. In the hotel world, we use a lot of space
compared to the number of sleeping rooms. The cost of the space is tied into
the room block. Currently, that space is complimentary to us because of our
room block.
The Convention Steering Committee (CSC) is asking for everyone to stay at
least one night in the hotel, and to be included in the housing lists sent in
by each chorus. Perhaps you can find a better rate through other sources,
but when that happens, your room is NOT counted in our contractual room block,
so please register through your chorus and not places like Expedia or AAA.
In
some Regions, a “hotel usage fee” has been instituted and any competitor not staying at the hotel is assessed a fee to help offset the cost of the
meeting spaces. We aren’t there yet, but it’s been discussed by the CSC. With everyone’s help, we won’t have to find a creative way, such as this, to
offset these costs.
So,
when your chorus Housing Chair asks you to get your roommates and fill out the
Housing Form, jump right in there and say, “Quick, sign me up to help fill up
this room block!”
submitted by Meech Debol,
Regional Convention Housing Chair

REGIONAL AFTERGLOW: We're having a face lift!
Our regional contest afterglows are
about to get a face lift! Trying to find something for everyone is quite a
challenge, but I think we have! We are going to take the large rooms on
the lobby level of the DoubleTree Hotel and set up rooms for the
following: tags, the art of wood-shedding, regional songs, some kind of
dancing(?), a piano bar (need volunteers to play, the piano, the piano!)...and
a room of tables and chairs for folks who just want to talk! If the interest is there, we can set up a room for performances as well.
Now, does that turn everyone’s
crank? Good! I thought it might! I’ll need to hear feedback from you or your
chorus if you’re interested in “hostessing” one of these rooms. Also, keep an
eye out for piano players. We’ll have at least one portable bar as well. We’re
figuring we’ll have about 1.5 hours to do our thing, from 10:30 pm until
midnight. I don’t think the hotel will let us run any longer. I will try,
however, to extend the hours if need be! How fun will this be?
submitted by Sue Hahn,
Regional Events Coordinator

TAG ROOM: Sharpen your
sight-singing skills!
Have you ever stopped by the Tag Room on Saturday night at regional convention? If not, you're missing out on an opportunity for some good singing fun. Plus
it's a great time to hone your sight singing skills, try out different parts,
and maybe find the missing quartet member you need. It's a multi-purpose event
for all you multi-taskers out there. It's even an opportunity for a few of the
brave to teach these awesome tags to a room full of laughing, energetic, 'high
on music' Sweet Adelines. So if you've never ventured into the Tag Room, stop
by and see what it's all about. If you're a regular, we can't wait to see you
again this year!
P.S. If you or someone you know is interested in teaching tags in the TAG
ROOM, please contact me: email /
907-745-8371.

Copyright Matters
The Pitch Pipe just finished the fourth of a
series of articles on copyright topics and you'd think things could stay "normal" now and let choruses and quartets get
their music in order. Silly you! Of course things would change!
Documentation that supported protecting original copies of sheet music by making
copies which could then be marked up has vanished from the copyright
world and a new interpretation is now in place. It doesn't matter whether
it's a cross-stitch pattern in a book or legal piece of sheet music: it cannot be copied legally, unless permission has been given by
the copyright holder and/or publisher, in writing, stating that copies can be made.
Here's the clarification article submitted for an upcoming issue of The Pitch Pipe (SAI),
by Judy Galloway, Region 24.

Working Copies Are No Longer Legal:
Copyright Clarification!
I need to make a clarification to the copyright information which was covered in
this magazine in 2007.
It is NOT legal to make working copies of our sheet music without getting
permission (in writing) for each song from the publisher or copyright holder
(including the Barbershop Harmony Society and Sweet Adelines International) ahead of time. Without this permission, in writing,
chorus members must have the original copies of the music when learning music
(and yes, also when marking up the sheet music). Chorus members can
not make a copy of their original sheet music for themselves, and the chorus can
not make copies for the chorus members. It is very specifically spelled out that
copies of the sheet music (except for extreme emergencies) is against the law.
This means that choruses (and possibly quartets) who did start making their own
"Working Copies" of new music for their members, that they will have to destroy
those illegal copies, after distributing the original pieces of sheet music out
to the members.
Now as odd as it seems, the reverse is true for audio recordings. If a chorus
member wants to make their own weekly "educational, personal" recording (tape,
CD, DVD, digital) of a chorus rehearsal in order to have something to work from
... then that single copy/recording IS legal.
Keep in mind that as more and more uses develop for copyrighted materials (right
now, YouTube comes to mind), the tighter the rules will get. Always make
copyright decisions as if YOU were the copyright holder wanting to collect every
dime possible for uses of your creation.
Updated copies of the entire research are
available here. If you have any questions about this material, please
drop me an email. |

RMT Musings
It is now time for nominations for several positions on the Regional
Management Team (RMT). This
cycle, the positions up for consideration are:
Events Coordinator
Marketing Coordinator
Membership Coordinator
Education Coordinator - Appointed by International.
This position has once again been filled by Patty Martin! (I should be hearing thunderous
applause here, as we’ve all benefited by her incredible diligence and
planning.)
Nominees for Events, Marketing and Membership Coordinators will be selected to fill the positions for a two-year term beginning
May 1, 2008 and ending April 30, 2010.
I
am writing to encourage you to run for regional office. Until I
was approached for the Finance Coordinator position, I really had no idea of
the workings of this team. I have to tell you, we work hard but we try to
do it smartly. For instance, we instituted video-conferencing to reduce
costs for our meetings (four of us live in western Washington and four of us live
in Alaska). We’ve used teleconferencing, and make ample use of emails
throughout the year.
I
urge you to consider running for one of these positions. Please feel free
to get in contact with me directly for an application or to nominate someone
you know for one of the three open positions. I can be reached by email at:
brucejan@drizzle.com
and I will send you an application.
Come on! Join us in planning for our region’s success future! Everyone can
make a difference.

RMT Meeting
Highlights
The Regional Management Team (RMT) met on January 19,
2008 in
Seattle, WA. The agenda included:
Convention 2008: CSC (Convention Steering
Committee) is meeting in Spokane, WA on 1/21/08. The Regional Annual Business
Meeting is planned for Thursday night of Convention with the Kick-Off
festivities following. The Annual Business Meeting will include the
installation of the 2008-2009 Regional Management Team. The Education
Direction Team is planning classes for Friday morning. Due to conflicts with
scheduled chorus rehearsals, and therefore a lack of participation, the Mass
Sing on Friday will not be held. The Education team is exploring the option of coordinating singing regional songs during intermission of the competitions. Before
providing webcasting of the convention, sponsors must be procured and resolution
of technical issues from experienced in 2007.
Convention 2009 & Beyond: Events Coordinator has
signed contracts for 2009 & 2010. The Events Coordinator and the Education
Coordinator completed several site visits of possible venues for 2011-2013 in
the greater Seattle/Tacoma area. We have tentative contracts for 2011 and 2013
in Spokane; but the Double Tree hotel is not available for 2012. Research into
alternate housing in Spokane is also being explored for 2012. Most
venues/hotels visited would require busing of competitors and possibly
attendees.
Summer Enrichment Time (SET) 2008: This is a joint event with Region 26. Education
Coordinator and Events Coordinator met with Region 26 in November in Vancouver,
BC and toured site facility; a Richmond, BC hotel. Region 13 RMT reviewed
proposed budgets by Region 26. Questions were noted and Finance Coordinator
will follow-up with Region 26 counterpart.
Summer Enrichment Time (SET) 2009 and Beyond: Betty Clipman is the
faculty for SET to be held August 7-0, 2009. The Education Committee met and
discussed faculty they would like to secure for SET through 2013; they will
contact potential faculty for availability.
TAG (Together And Growing) Visits 2008: To date approximately
nine
chapters have expressed interest in a TAG visit. TAG visits are being scheduled
through December 2008.
Revitalization and Prospective Choruses: RMT
members were updated on status of chapters in Revitalization and Prospective Chapters. Voices Northwest has received approval to
charter from Sweet Adelines
International. Membership Coordinator and Finance Coordinator are planning a
visit in January to congratulate the newly chartered chapter.
International Education Symposium (IES) Scholarships: RMT agreed to increase the
number of Scholarships from one to three effective 2009. The scholarship will work
for IES (last one is in 2008), SAI Area School or International Convention.
RMT Nominations:
Discussed status on applications for four team positions expiring in April
2008. Team has already recommended Patty Martin to SAI and she has been approved as the
Education Coordinator for 2008-2010.

The Many Categories of Sweet Adelines
Membership
It
is with mixed emotions I write this last communication as your Regional
Membership Manager. I have enjoyed my time working on the Regional Management
Team so very much. What a joy to plan activities for our region, all the
while laughing and getting to know members from other choruses! I encourage
every one of you to explore the possibility of seeking a regional office. You
will learn so much and enjoy the company of wonderful new friends.
Over the four years I have served on this team, there have been some dynamic
changes in the “membership” category. We now have a newly defined group of
members in MAL (Members at Large) who belong only to the international
organization. Our CAL (Chapter at Large) members continue to belong to the
international organization and to the region in which they live.
Perhaps the most dynamic change has been in the category of dual membership.
Initially, this category allowed a member to belong to two choruses in two
different regions. That category has now been expanded to allow members to
participate as dual members in two choruses within the same region. This has
been done to encourage and allow more Sweet Adelines to experience the
international competition experience.
Sweet Adelines International continues to seek to expand its activities to
meet the needs of all of its members. 2007 saw many SAI members in choruses on
the eastern side of Washington state become dual members and join our
international contestant chorus, Spirit of Spokane, onstage in Calgary! Our
2008 international-bound chorus, Pacific Sound,
is also inviting interested members to
consider dual membership as they prepare for harmonizing the international
stage in Hawaii in November.
I
hope the beginning of 2008 finds you happy in your chorus experiences. Keep
the melodies ringing!
Most fondly,
Gayle Robinson, Membership Manager

Chorus Chatter
Blue Mountain
Chorus
“Find Your Voice!” “Revitalize Your Life!” The
Blue Mountain Chorus, in Walla Walla, WA, used those
slogans to advertise their
Singers Wanted campaign which began in late September. After the chorus
received an okay last June to enter into the new new Sweet Adelines
International Revitalization program for choruses who have experienced loss of
members as well as loss of a director, a strategy meeting took place shortly
after. The ideas were popping! Former director Darlene Filla volunteered to come
out of “retirement” to spearhead a large-scale publicity campaign and teach a
vocal lesson series in the fall.
Andreanna (Andi) Flores began directing the chorus in August. Her energy and
love of the barbershop art form have made every rehearsal a joyful and
educational experience! Andi is a Certified Director and was an assistant
director for the Rolling Hills Chorus where she is a member of the bass
section.
We
were thrilled when 23 women attended the vocal lesson series!
Members of the chorus also participated. After a 45-minute
lesson and a short physical warm-up, everyone got on the risers to learn two
new songs. Our guests gave us very positive feedback and six women returned to rehearsals after the holiday break.
We
plan to continue our publicity campaign in the community and
already
have seen more
new faces this year. We’re working on a performance package that will
be evaluated by Education Director Patty Martin this spring, so we can
begin performing in public again. And we‘ll be looking forward to our
“comeback” on the competition stage in 2009!!

Fairbanks Frontier Chorus
If a dream is a wish your heart makes, the
Fairbanks Chapter can vouch
dreams DO come true if you wish and work hard enough. Our dream was to show our
love, support and appreciation for our troops in Iraq for all they are doing for
us.
A few years ago we started a new fundraiser selling
"Singing Christmas Cards" by speaker phone to people around the nation. It
caught on in our community and this year, as a gift from the chorus, we added
Iraq to our list of calls.
We didn't know if it would be possible to pull troops
together in a war zone to listen to a brief Sweet Adelines concert, but acting
on our dream we contacted Ft. Wainwright, near Fairbanks, well in advance.
Thanks to the wonderful support of our military personnel, word finally arrived
from Iraq that troops would be standing by for our calls. In addition, they’d
arranged for us to call three locations on two separate days instead of just
one. Due to tight security, they could only tell us that Task Force 49 deployed
from Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, and Anchorage troops with the 17th Combat Support
Brigade from Ft. Richardson, would be awaiting our calls.
On December 16, we gathered at a briefing room at the
Fairbanks Police Department--pitchpipe and long distance calling card in
hand--with about 60 cards to deliver all over the North American continent, plus
three to Iraq. We even had reporters from the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner
covering the event.
With a-12 hour time difference between Fairbanks and Iraq,
our 1:30 pm call from Alaska on Sunday “arrived” in Iraq on Monday, Dec 17 at
1:30 am in Iraq, but the post operator got us right through. During one call, a
soldier in the background asked who we were and from where. When we told him, he
yelled out to the others, "Oh, wow! I've seen them before in Fairbanks and
they’re GREAT!" Receiving a call “from home” got their spirits up, and certainly
ours as well.
It was hard to tell to whom this meant more:
them or us. We felt so incredibly uplifted by their reception and appreciation.
The applause and whistles, which sounded like heavy static after traveling over
thousands of miles of telephone lines, continued to the moment each call ended.
The “thank yous" and "we love you, too!" heard in the background continue to
live on in our hearts and minds and will never leave us.

Jet Cities
Chorus
“What should the next
show be about?” Jet Cities faced
that question over a year ago in regards to our 2007 show. The music team
brain-stormed and a collective light bulb went on as we discovered Nancy
Bergman, one of Sweet Adelines International’s most talented and well-known
members, had arranged almost all of our songs. Maybe the show could feature
her music? And, hey…maybe she’d come to Seattle and be the emcee!
All it took was one
email. Within a day, Nancy had replied “YES!!!!”, and soon after inquired
about combining it with her 80th birthday party. How could we possibly say no?
The chorus learned
new songs and polished others. Nancy chimed in with dialogue direction, and
every quartet learned a Nancy B arrangement, including LiveWire and
The Buzz!, our featured guests.
Saturday, November
10, 2007: The theater was full with friends, family, and attendees from
Ovation’s Quartet Workshop. From the moment our “Inside the Musician’s Studio”
show opened with Sue Beck as “James Lipton” to the last wonderful note of
Harmonize the World, directed by the composer herself, Nancy Bergman, it
was an unforgettable experience. We’re ready to do it again when Nancy turns
90!

Pacific Sound Chorus
The phenomenon
of dual membership, allowing more members of Sweet Adelines to participate in
competitions at the international level, has taken on quite a life of its
own! To that end, Pacific Sound Chorus members and its director,
Susan Kegley,
send you a warm invitation to consider riding the (sound) waves to Honolulu in
November of 2008 with us!
As the Pacific Sound membership
manager, I encourage you to contact me by March 11, 2008 if you have an
interest in dual membership. I can send you the general requirements and give
you the online address of the PSC website that is set up strictly for members
considering singing with Pacific Sound in Hawaii.
I can be reached by email or at

RiversEdge
Chorus
There are so many good things
happening with RiversEdge Chorus! In November we had coaching with Sharon Babb, and
we all had individual PVIs. It was a great weekend, during which she gave us
many tools to improve our competition package.
We had our second annual Christmas show,
“How the Grinch Got Her Groove Back”, on December 10. It snowed that day,
but it didn’t stop our audience from coming! We had a nearly full house and
everyone had a wonderful time. Bake sales, raffles, the Grinch, Santa, and
good music made for a great afternoon of holiday merriment. The chorus also
had some performances during the Christmas season, and isn’t that what we all
love to do? Spreading holiday cheer through singing is just the best!
Now the holidays are over, and just
like the rest of you, we are hard at work on our competition
package. We had a longer than usual hiatus for Christmas, so everyone was chompin' at the bit to get back to work. Our first night back brought a very
snowy and treacherous drive, but we had 100% attendance from our members! What
commitment! We are all looking forward to Spring and regional competition in
April. See you all in Spokane!

We are OFFICIAL! The
Snohomish-based chorus, Voices
Northwest, was chartered in January with 32 members and we are
still growing. We've outgrown our risers already!

Like everyone else, we are
busy preparing for the upcoming regional contest and our director, Sue
Beck, has high hopes for us. About two-thirds of the chorus members
are new to Sweet Adelines, so it's been quite interesting to learn about
all the things involved in going to contest. Everyone is excited though
and looking forward to making new friends around the region. We are
planning a little chartering celebration during contest weekend in
Spokane, so stop by and join us for a little fun and music.

Queen's Corner!
I am now singing in a new/old quartet
called California Satin. We are a long distant quartet; we sang and competed together in the 70's and, at the moment, are
meeting on a two/three month basis for about three to four days each time. We've had
a blast and are enjoying one another again, but are not actually registered as
a quartet. I'll let you know when this happens!
Our quartet is attempting
to establish a "Seniors" division in the quartet world and hope to be allowed
to compete at that level. Region 21 is hosting a "Seniors Festival" at their
Winter meeting in January, 2009. At last notice all "Seniors" will be invited to
attend; stay tuned for particulars. I am looking forward to being one of the
first quartets to break this barrier!
Yours in quartet Harmony,

Certified 50 year SAI Member
Quartet International Champion (1965 - Shalimars)
Four time Regional Quartet Champion
Member of 13 quartets in my lifetime!
