happens when you put 25 choreographers in one room together for an entire day? Spontaneous combustion!\~ Region 13 hosted a Visual Leader Workshop on September 16, featuring SET faculty, Gene Bender, for part of the afternoon session. We spent the morning analyzing chorus performance videotapes and discussing how we, as visual leaders, can help our choruses move \'93up the ladder\'94 to achieve higher scores in competition. Gene fired up the afternoon with a class on characterization, and we spent the remainder of the day in small groups helping one another create visual plans (thanks to additional group leaders Lisa Allen, Cindy Hamilton and Kay Scharr). Ra ve reviews have convinced me that we need to create an opportunity for visual leaders to meet and work together every year.\~ \par \par For those of you who missed this fun day, here are a few summarizing thoughts:\~ \par \par }{\b\f2\insrsid13329022\charrsid4811019 VISUAL LEADER ABCs \par }{\f2\fs20\insrsid13329022 Often, Visual Leader time gets consumed by creating, teaching, drilling and polishing physical moves for chorus songs. However, our role can and should be much broader.\~ Consider these ABCs: hints for baking the perfect \'93 visual cake\'94: \par \par Assist each singer to learn visual performance skills. Everything starts with the right ingredients.\~ For effective visual performance, a singer must have championship posture, energy, stamina, facial animation, and physical freedom. Jump out front many ti mes during every rehearsal to encourage singers to realign their bodies, generate energy and loosen up! \par \par Bring joy to rehearsals and performance. Joy is the fuel that \'93cooks\'94 our basic ingredients into a passionate and exciting performance. Visual Leaders are in a perfect position to take responsibility for this area. Incorporate \'93Energy Boosters \'94 into your rehearsals and infuse the chorus frequently with activities that will make them laugh and play. \par \~ \par Create a climate of confidence and risk-taking attitudes. With the basic ingredients in place and a steady stream of positive energy fueling each singer, the chorus is ready to \'93frost the cake.\'94 We chose singing over other hobbies because (somewhere within us) we want the thrill of performing and competing. Visual Leaders can promote these goals by continually challenging singers to reach for deeper emotions, stronger personal commitment, and higher levels of risk in all aspects of performance.\~ \par \par Go forth and be mighty, Visual Leaders! Your choruses await your enthusiasm, encouragement and challenge. \par \par }{\i\f2\fs20\insrsid13329022\charrsid13981379 submitted by Melanie Wroe, Pacific Sound Chorus, Region 13 Visual Coordinator, Certified Showmanship Judge \par }{\f2\fs20\insrsid13329022 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ \par \par }{\b\f2\insrsid13329022\charrsid4811019 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2006 INTERNATIONAL COMPETITORS! \par }{\f2\fs20\insrsid13329022 \par Our heartiest congratulations go to Unplugged, Transit and Spirit of Spokane for their wonderful representation of North Pacific Region 13 in Detroit last month. \par \par Despite last minute changes in venue thanks to Hurricane Katrina, they all weathered the storm (I know, really bad pun!) and put on captivating performances. \par \par Unplugged finished with Seventh Place medals and will be back again next year! The Coeur d\rquote Alene Chorus has reached a milestone of making chords ring for twenty years. \par \par In celebration of this achievement we have dedicated our upcoming November 13 show to highlight our twentieth anniversary. We will be using a mannequin display of all the chorus costumes spanning the last twenty years to decorate the stage area\'85 even the costumes some members had hoped that they\rquote d never have to see again (at least they won\rquote t have to wear them!). We decided to nix the fashion show idea in the early planning stages. A high-tech power point presentation will feature memories from the past to the present. \par \par The show is called \'93Harmony Confidential\'94. It is a musical mystery comedy that will provide plenty of laughs along with entertaining barbersho p music. We are taking this opportunity to invite all of our former members to learn the song "How We Sang Today" and join us on stage to sing the final number. We are looking forward to having a great time celebrating the life of the chorus with every on e that attends. \par \par Chorus life, as in everyday life, is full of changes. Last minute riser replacement, added choreo, and tempo changes to the music you have already learned are just a few of the changes we experience as chorus members. The Coeur d\rquote Alene Cho rus is going to experience a major change that is in the process right now. Our founding director, Sally Wallace, has faithfully led the chorus for the last twenty years. She dedicated her time and energy and poured her heart into doing whatever was neede d for the chorus to succeed. Sally sought to improve her knowledge and musical skills over the years, and has left a lasting legacy in the lives of women she has touched with the love of barbershop music. Don\rquote t panic, Sally isn\rquote t leaving the chorus, she just wants a chance to SING after all these years! She is joining the ranks of all you wonderful baritones. \par \par Sally\rquote s retirement left a void in the chorus that has recently been filled after a Director search. Bianca Perry, of the Spirit of Spokane Chorus, will begin to transition into the Director\rquote s position after our November show. \par \par So no matter how you view it, age and change are beautiful things. The International staff is incredible. \par \par The move to Motown was good one for us.\~Teresa got to visit with her Great-Aunt Sally, who pointed out that they hadn't seen each other in almost 20 years!\~Plus two of her aunts from Western Pennsylvania were able to make the trip to Detroit fo r the contest. \par \par Judy's parents drove down from Toronto to attend the convention. It was the first time her parents had seen us in person (they've only ever seen video or heard the CD). They even got to meet Chris, Judy's boyfriend, who got there just in ti me to see us on Wednesday night. \par \par Anna and Julie's parents were also able to make the trip and get all their arrangements switched from New Orleans to Detroit, as were Julie's husband Ron and daughter, Megan. \par \par In all, we had thirteen family members along for the journey! We traveled to Greektown, a section of Detroit, on both Friday and Saturday nights to have big family dinners. Luckily, we were able to get some family photos!\~ There will be pictures on our website soon of the four of us with all eight of o ur parents. The funny part of the family photos was that when we were taking them, other Sweet Adelines (whom we didn't know) were also in the restaurant and they started taking photos of us, too!! \par \par Thank you all for all your good wishes and encouragement. Gene taught us that the words and the emotions behind those words are the key to a truly compelling performance. We have to emotionally tell the story and touch the audience's heart and in turn, we will touch the\~ hearts of the audience members with pencils (judges). We have to truly open ourselves up and let our emotions hang out. We might cry, get angry, laugh; it doesn't matter, because it's all good. So let's make it everyone's goal this year to keep the audience's collective noses o ut of the program. We need to move them, touch them, and they will love us for it. \par \par }{\i\f2\fs20\insrsid13329022\charrsid13981379 Karen Leet \par 907.745.8371 / ckleet@gci.net \par }{\f2\fs20\insrsid13329022 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ \par \par }{\b\f2\insrsid13329022\charrsid4811019 EDUCATION COORDINATOR \par }{\f2\fs20\insrsid13329022 \par Wow!
