One big change for the Region is the transition to an ALL electronic InTune. The RMT has spent a great deal of time analyzing costs and options, and while we know an electronic publication doesn’t meet everyone’s needs, we’re hoping that the cost savings will be appreciated by everyone. Please see the opening article in this InTune for more about this. Come join the Regional Management Team as a Regional Officer! This is a group of fun, dynamic, hardworking women, and the experience of working at a different level of Sweet Adelines is extremely rewarding. The positions open this year are for Education Coordinator, Chapter Coordinator, Events Coordinator, and Marketing and Membership Coordinator. Any Divas needing more adventure? Did you know we have several choruses without a director? Did you know most of our current directors came from "the risers"? I encourage any motivated divas to take a chance, think about stepping off the risers and begin waving your arms out front (like Lucy - Rolling Hills', and Teresa - Jet Cities', new directors! We may have just finished our 2005 Convention a few months ago, but our group is starting to work on 2006 and beyond. We have signed contracts through April of 2009. For those of you that like to get things on your calendar early, these are our convention dates for the next few years: April 20-23, 2006; April 26-29, 2007; April 24-27, 2008 and April 2-5, 2009. Be sure to check all the dates posted on our regional calendar. On another note, I would love it if I could get some feedback from you directly about our 2006 convention. One of the ideas is to modify our Thursday Night Showcase and Saturday Night Festival of Champions. We have discussed having our International-bound chorus and quartet perform on Saturday when we have a larger audience. This would mean the 2006 winners would sing a little less and we would have strict time limits on all of the performers. To fill the Showcase, we were thinking of asking all of the choruses to have representatives, either the whole chorus, a quartet or an ensemble perform. Please contact me with your ideas.

As we start out our new fiscal year, I find it's important to clarify our regional assessments and how the dollars are figured. Each Chapter-at-Large (CAL) member has been sent a letter requesting payment of her $25 regional dues. Unfortunately, these have been slow in coming in. Please remember that to remain in good standing, all dues must be current. For choruses--and here's where there has been some confusion--the total that I used to calculate the bill that was sent came from the International membership statistics published in early May. These figures come FROM THE CHORUS MEMBERSHIP PERSON! In order to adjust your roster numbers, you need to remember that a letter must come FROM THE INDIVIDUAL LEAVING in order for that individual to be removed from your totals. This effects your international assessment as well as your regional assessment. And International does not do refunds! Gayle Robinson, MMC for the region, has informed me that electronic versions of resignations are acceptable and they will help keep your membership correctly listed with SAI. So if possible, get an email from your member! WANTED! Hello All of You Darling Divas! I am in great hopes that all of
you are receiving your weekly modules from headquarters explaining this
exciting new program for membership recruitment and retention. Please join
me at SET in September for the very latest from IES on how to best
implement all that this campaign offers. This program is founded on strong
principles of "word of mouth sales", sharing of our musical product and
the fellowship and loyalty that product can invoke. The campaign is based
on an extensive professional marketing analysis. But the end result is
that every chorus, and every member of every chorus, must understand the
underlying principles and how to best use them to make this whole process
work.Remember, it is imperative that each chorus has a copy of the “Members Count Tool Kit” as the guiding principles for this comprehensive program. If your chorus does not have one of the Tool Kits, contact headquarters immediately. They have even made a modified version available online. How cool is that? Your 2005 Regional Management Team was fortunate in having expert help in letting started in May when a new Sweet Adelines training program came to the Pacific Northwest. Ellen Gallacher, a member of the Sweet Adelines faculty, provided our team with two days of valuable work and helped us to become a well-oiled machine to carry out the programs and plans for all Region 13 members. Team building, conflict management, problem solving, long-range planning, budgeting ... all the essential were covered in our busy agenda. As Team Manager, I came away from that week-end confident our region's work is being carried out by very talented women. Each manager brings a wealth of experience and talent to her assignments and even though we are from far-flung parts of the region, we find our communications and discussions (thanks to e-mail) very efficient and productive. Our priority is to keep those communication lines open to all members. We initiated a "chorus-buddy" contact process and now have "Sparkplugs" in each chorus who will function as the pipeline for information flow both to and from Regional Team managers. If you do not know who your chorus Sparkplug is, ask your chorus team manager/president. To learn how each manager can be of help to you and to answer questions, we urge you to get acquainted with your Regional Management Team on Friday afternoon at SET when we will have a special session with the RMT. Welcome to the Electronic Only InTune! This is it: with this issue, we're going "electronic only" for our regional newsletter. The members of the Region 13 Management Team, the InTune team, editor Nancy Gott, web mistress extraordinaire Sue Middleton, and great gal and proofreader Anne Sutherland, have worked hard to make this concept a reality for the benefit of the region. (Note: Both Sue and Anne are past Communications and Technology Coordinators.)We recognize that this is a big change for everyone. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback on our trial version, and some not so enthusiastic responses, too. I personally was one of the last holdouts for a printed version until it came down to dollars. The costs of our printed InTune are close to $4,000.00 per year. That might seem okay, but did you realize that we can fund several additional Area Schools with those funds? As soon as it came down to more education for our membership, I decided I could print my own copy of the InTune off the website or from my email! For those of you without email or Internet access, this change is the most difficult for you. You will get a final printed version of the electronic InTune from the Region, and then we’re turning to your chorus sisters to ask them to print a couple of copies to share. We hope that you recognize the benefit to the region as a whole. And please let me know about any new ideas you might have on how to distribute InTune to chorus members who aren’t on the Internet.So read on, there’s so much information in so little time!  The
60th anniversary of Sweet Adelines International was celebrated in
Anchorage, Alaska the best way: with music! The day started with Chill
Factor singing on radio station 97.3 KOOL at 7:00 am. (97.3 is the oldies
station, but we don’t think that makes any kind of statement…) Anchorage
got to wake up with the wonderful sounds of barbershop, and the fun of
hanging out with DJ Cary Carrigan. The day also included proclamations from the Governor of the State of Alaska, and from the Mayor of Anchorage declaring July 13, 2005 to be Barbershop Music Appreciation Day. The highlight of the day was a Mass Sing in Town Square, located in downtown Anchorage. We had members from the Top of the World Chorus, the Anchorage Sourdough Chorus, and Chapter at Large. Karen Leet, director of TOTW, directed the group of about 35 Sweet Adelines in several regional songs. Both choruses entertained the audience with several repertoire songs, then all current and former Sweet Adelines were asked to join together in “How We Sang Today”. July 13th, 2005 was a wonderful day of harmony, joy, and friendship with this craft we love—Barbershop Music!submitted by Chera Boom

We opened two Anchorage Pilots’ games singing the national anthem with improved breath support due to our belly dancing lesson, taught by a local dance instructor during rehearsal warm-up. Yes, belly dancing helps breathing. We became more intimate with those important muscles that support our ribs. Honored by Proclamations from the Mayor and the Governor, Sourdoughs and Top of the World joined to serenade an impromptu audience at Town Square in observance of Barbershop Appreciation Day. Chill Factor added to the celebration with an early morning radio spot. submitted by Mona HendricksonJet Cities Chorus Jet Cities Chorus is absolutely thrilled to announce Teresa McCafferty as our new director! Many of you already know Teresa, but if not, here are some of her accomplishments:She is the tenor of Unplugged, the 2005 Sixth Place Sweet Adelines International Quartet, and a member of Pacific Sound Chorus, the 2005 Sixth Place International Chorus. Teresa is on the Region 13 faculty and has participated in numerous workshops, coaching/PVI sessions, and other educational events. She and Anna Chamberlain (Unplugged, baritone) created the Sea-Adeline Education Endowment Fund two years ago to provide financial support for the promotion, education and development of quartet singing in Region 13. Teresa brings to Jet Cities enthusiasm, an incredible love of barbershop, and the desire to share it all with EVERYONE! She has impressed us with her knowledge and teaching skills, and is working hard on that "arm waving stuff"! We know she will be an unbelievable asset to our chorus family.We plan to have an open house in late summer or fall when things get settled down. Please look for the invitation, because we'd love to have you come and check out Jet Cities' new director. submitted by Sue MiddletonKitsap Pines Chorus A Sweet Adelines Heads-Up! The Kitsap Pines Chorus was asked to sing at a Kitsap Bluejackets' baseball game on June 24th. After performing the National Anthem, we took our seats and, unfortunately, paid little attention to what was happening at home plate. A foul ball was hit, and headed straight for the head of one of our chorus members, Margaret McDaniel, striking her just in back of her right temple. The paramedics were called and Margaret was transported by ambulance to the emergency room at the local hospital. Examined and found to have a concussion, she appeared to be all right otherwise and was sent home that evening with her husband.Margaret ended up with two black eyes and a lump on her head, but her spirits were high and her voice and love for sports, especially baseball, was undaunted. The chorus, responding to one of our own, was most supportive with calls and cards. A few of the cards humorously “thanked her” for saving the rest of the chorus from the beaning. Margaret is recovering nicely, but the process is slow. To her credit she has appeared in several performances, black eyes and all. written by Al Butler (chorus husband!) and submitted by Michelle KirkpatrickTop of the World Chorus The first weekend in July found the Top of the World Chorus stepping off the ferry Tustumena to help the fishing village of Seldovia, Alaska, kick off their 4th of July Festival. Seldovia boasts a population of "307 friendly people, and a few old crabs." But in a town where hip waders and a plaid flannel shirt make a fashion statement, even the old crabs seemed delighted to see a troupe of ladies decked out in purple and lots of sequins.In the company of kids on bikes, dogs on leashes, and floats on four-wheelers, we paraded the length of the town - - all three blocks of it -- then wowed the hometown folks and a couple thousand visitors with a short concert at the harbor's edge. But this was just a warm-up. A water taxi scooted us back across Kachemak Bay -- past a pod of humpback whales who saluted us with their mighty flukes -- to the town of Homer just in time for their parade. With "Bandstand in Central Park" as our competition song, it's fitting that we ended our day with a concert in Homer's little community bandstand.submitted by Terry Alexander UnpluggedUnplugged is “plugging” along on the road to New Orleans. We’ve been working with our wonderful coaches, Dale Syverson, Darlene Rogers, Peggy Barnes and Sandy Robinson, getting great tips and suggestions on how to improve on our past successes at International. We just spent the last weekend of July with Dale and were able to open up time for four other quartets to work with her as well. We've been having some fun along the way, too. In July, we drove to Salt Lake City for the men's convention. Yes, we spent approximately 28 hours in the car together and we still love each other … amazing! What a thrill it was for us to be there and watch our friends in Realtime take home the big prize!Teresa, Julie and Anna will all be at SET, teaching, coaching and participating in the weekend's events. Unfortunately, Judy might not be able to make it this year. Her chorus, Lions Gate, is also competing in New Orleans and their big retreat is the same weekend as SET. Judy is going to do what she can to try and make it down for the Saturday evening festivities, but right now it doesn't look hopeful. So, if you really want to make sure you catch us before we head to New Orleans, come see us on Saturday, August 27th in Burien. We are hosting our annual Quartet Extravaganza and will have both men's and women's' quartets from all over the area performing, including several from Canada! Details for the show are on our website.We can't believe that New Orleans is so close. We're looking forward to sharing the stage with our friends from Transit, Omni, Spirit of Spokane and Lions Gate. Regions 13 and 26 will be well represented again this year! a fantastic time we had singing together on July 13th at Barbershop Music
Appreciation Day! A real opportunity to share our love of barbershop with
sisters from many choruses. Thanks to the Olympia Chapter for making the
arrangements and to Carol Kirkpatrick for directing. I know there was a
huge celebration in Anchorage also - hooray for you folks up there.
